WordPress Blog SEO for Beginners

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This is when you modify your website so that it ranks higher in search engines and generates more traffic for you.

The great thing about blogging software like WordPress is that it is search engine friendly.

Does that mean your site is as optimized as it can be? No. But you have a good base to start from.

One thing you can do with your WordPress blog is to optimize the permalinks to use the title as the default link text. This strengthens the title words for the page.

The following image shows where to put the custom code. The code is /%postname%-%post_id%.htm

Wordpress SEO Permalinks

The code makes the link the post name and the post ID (to avoid duplication.) This is only one option, but it is a good way to set it and forget it and your posts will get better search engine results..

Another important element of SEO on your WordPress site is the All in one SEO pack. This is a free plug-in that you can install on WordPress that will let you set the meta tag information for the site and better target your keywords. Just search for it in the wordpress plug-in website.

Wordpress SEO Pack

The reason we want to bring this to your attention before you get too far along is because you do not want to publish a lot of information and then modify the url after it has already been indexed by search engines. It is much easier to get it set up correctly from the beginning.

The Best SEO may be NO SEO?

OK, I would not go that far.

Search Engine Optimization will always help. However, if you have a few hours to invest in your website, you should create more great content instead of worrying about modifying your meta tags. I saw one client that published 15 articles per week for years get great search engine results, even though they did not care about search engine results.  They were only publishing for their employees.

Great information, especially if it gets linked to by other people, will help you get noticed quickly in search engines.

You can set up a WordPress Blog in a few minutes at www.outstandahosting.com and buy a great template at template monster.

Interview with Scott White – Brand Identity Guru Inc.

In a perfect world, employee evangelism strengthens your brand and spreads its message.  But unless you have a strong brand that clearly stands for something and can be easily passed from person to person, your brand can never grow legs and take off running.

BIG - Brand Identity GuruScott White, the Big Kahuna of BIG – Brand Identity Guru – agreed to give us a few tips on making the brand more Buzz friendly.  For more information read his blog: http://www.brandidentityguru.com/wordpress and use his research services  if you want to pump up your brand.

Ron: Scott, What are 3 simple ways to improve a brand that most people can do themselves?

 Scott:

1. Social Media- get on Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace etc. It’s easy and free and you can pick up some great business.

2. Blog- on a regular basis, tell your story, be compelling and honest.

3. e-Newsletter – sending out an e-newsletter is simple and very inexpensive to do. Staying in front of your prospects is really important.

Ron:  What does a brand expert like you do that is different?  What could someone expect if they hired a professional brander?

Scott:  They would expect us to develop a brand identity and positioning that are different and unique. I’ve been out to see Fortune 500 company’s that can’t tell me their own positioning. Why are you better? What makes you different? Are you ready to live that brand?

Ron: If someone wants to create a buzz, what does their brand need to have to make success easier?

Scott: A definitive brand identity. If Volvo the auto maker stands for safety what do you stand for. It’s the toughest question a company can answer.

Ron: Who should contact you and how do they reach you?

Scott: Anyone responsible for their company brand should contact us. And we’re a small boutique branding agency of only 15 so call me directly at 508-238-4347 or email me at swhite@brandidentityguru.com. Ask for the BIG Kahuna!

Thanks Scott.  Remember, if your Brand is weak, employee evangelism will be much harder.  Check out there excellent website and blog.

Buzzoodle – New Blog Format

For a long time, I have not been happy with my blog format.  I knew it was not great but it was too much work to revamp it.

Revolution WordPress ThemeThen my friend Phil Gerbyshak posted a link to a new blog theme he’d bought called Revolution Theme.

I really liked it and I spend the last couple of nights customizing the templates.  There is still more to do on this, but let me know what you think.  Our brand and focus (Employee Evangelism) is getting clearer and the new blog look I hope is very friendly to employees and business owners alike.

The only downside to this format is that you need to drill into individual articles more.

As always, post comments and point out the typos to me.  :)

Profile of a Hypocritical Blogger

Recently, a blogger found my list of 99 Websites where you can create buzz and he posted it on his blog, Brand Identity Guru.  He also dropped me a polite email.

When I saw it, I was a bit unhappy because I’d spent two days on that post and it drives a lot of visitors to my site, so I did not want to have the list appearing elsewhere in full.  I emailed him and let him know that I was not requesting he take it down, but I thought a partial list with a “See the full list” link would be more appropriate.

He complied within 2-3 minutes and the birds started cherping in my head again.

Then I realized my hypocracy.  Hadn’t I just done the same thing with 100 Best Business Blogs?

Well, I may just be a hypocrite.  I did call the Brand Identity Guru and let them know I was one.  The difference, in my head, was that the list I compiled was for companies.  The list of bloggers will benefit more from the links I copied, and it was my intention to give them all some visibility. – Weak, I know.

What do you think?  Would you copy a list?  Would you let someone copy your list?

Top 100 Marketing Blogs

We made the list!  Business opportunities and ideas published a list of the top 100 business blogs and we are in the 50′s.  I will take that.

[10/27/2007 Correction - Top Business Blogs, not marketing - I have marketing on the brain!]

Chris Brown had the great idea to post the list herself and challenge the rest of us to do it.

So here is the list – and congratulations to everyone that made this great list.

John defines a Business blog as “one that provides business ideas, advice, commentary or feedback on business in general.” He’s excluded sites that he feels are primarily a news based site or that is merely posting content from other sources and sites that are too new or have not been updated for over a month.

If you think he’s left an important blog out then contact him with a reason and he’ll consider making the changes.

Z-List Update

A while back I wrote about the z-list, which has vastly improved my technorati ranking.

Chris Brown did a new version of the list with descriptions and I thought it was simple yet valuable, so I am reposting it here.  Thanks Chris.

A – List, Z- List

A Marketing Blog Called the Viral Garden is leading the charge of listing the top 25 marketing blogs. And another more interesting charge, the notable z-listers. I moved from a Blogspot blog to this Word Press blog a while back and I knew it would hurt my traffic. I accepted it and got on with life. Thus, I am more a z-lister now than before.

The cool thing the viral garden is doing is asking people to put up his list of notable z-list blogs on your blog, if you have one. Just copy and paste. Blogs are given rank by traffic and by links to the blog. I love this viral, grass roots effort to help people find good blogs that have less buzz at this point. I love it more because I am on the list. Here it is.

Nice idea and I am looking forward to visiting all these blogs.

PS: Mike at Converstations is the one responsible for getting me on the list and I own him a big thanks. He has some excellent articles over there as well, that fit perfectly with what I write about.?

Welcome to the New Buzzoodle Blog

Welcome to the new blog.  I moved from Blogspot to WordPress to have more control over the blog, to have more plug in options and to provide easier to find content for visitors via categories.  I hope you like it and PLEASE send me feedback if you see something you love or hate.

I will continue to publish on the old blog for a while as well, but within a few months that will stop.  So the sooner you change your RSS feed or bookmark, the sooner we can get back up to speed and start looking ahead.

I am sorry for the hassle, but in the long run this will be much better.

The Accidental Blog

A few days ago I mentioned the success of this blog as a way to promote our business and philosophy. We did not initially think it would play such a critical role in our success. One unexpected result is that I have a blogger account, and the blog is not an integrated part of the rest of our web presence.

Anita Campbell of Small Biz Trends recently moved to a more professional solution and I thought some of you may be interested in what is involved. Here is her case study.

She reported to me that her search engine traffic has gone way up, and she is happy with the move. The moral of her story is the sooner the better, so I am going to have to think about moving some time soon myself.
