Job Search and Facebook

I saw this about facebook and job hunting on CNN.

Personally, I think it is your future employer’s business. I would never hire anyone that bashes a former boss or manager. Period.

It is a question of character. If someone is willing to bash a previous employer they will do the same to future employer. They cannot be depended on. They do not care about past co-workers, managers or people that paid them.

I would hire someone that drinks and has a good time – that is a bit different. As long as you are not degrading people or out of control, go ahead and have a good time. You might want to take it easy on how much you publish online though.

The question I have for readers is this: If someone makes their profile private does it send up flags that this person is hiding something? I think yes. I might not hire someone because they have locked down their profile. What about you? Would this be a warning sign?

Hi! We found your website because we work for the company that makes Fuzzoodles. :)

Anyway, I wanted to make a quick remark about this post. I hide my profile because I like to post pictures of my kids, etc. Plus, I have a lot of friends who live different lifestyles and was judged by a previous employer because of this, specifically homosexuals. And when I make a post that reflects my political point of view I don’t necessarily want a future employer to see that.

So there are a lot of reasons to make your profile private or to not have one at all. And I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily to hide anything detrimental. Just my 2 cents!
