Are you selling stuff or building relationships?

Guy Kawasaki has a post on his Apple upgrade to Air.  It is great because it looks at how a relationship can be very complex.

There are a lot of places this could have gone wrong, with Apple and with Microsoft, but everything comes together.  What is best with this article is how Guy analyzes himself as a consumer, instead of blaming the vendor.

    Sometimes, with pressure or a quota hanging above our heads like a Damocles Sword, we forget all about relationships. Our minds are filled with images of increased sales and our goal becomes purely to sell as much as we can. As lovely as the idea of building relationships is, some people just ignore it all together.

    People buy because they trust you and the relationship. Invest in the relationship and you have a customer for life.

    I agree with mahei on this one. I think most customers appreciate the relationship and trust, and that is why they would keep coming back. I know that is why I always go get my oil changed in my car at the same place. I go there because I’ve been there before and have built a trusting relationship with that business, I know they did a good job last time so I’ll keep going back with the hopes that they will keep doing a good job.
    For me, as a small business owner, it’s not even about the quota. Yet. I just started my business and right now it is about attracting the customer first. Then build a relationship. It took a while to realize that my company wasn’t standing apart from the others and that was why I didn’t have the clients. I started grabbing the clients attention by making my small business appear more professional, and it worked. I accomplished that by choosing a company logo which is now used on all my brochures, letter heads, and even my business cards. A friend, who started his small business a couple years ago, told me to go to http://www.pixellogo.com for a logo. So I did. So, one must realize that first you have to attract the customers before you have to worry about making them happy. In the end, it’s all about the customers. So try looking at things from their point of view when you feel yourself getting stressed. I sometimes find that an easy way to calm myself down.
