Thanks for all the comments on this post.

There seems to be a lot of interest in ethics. I have addressed the issue in the past, but not recently.

Lets assume buzz marketing is broadly the practice of getting people to pass along messages. There are clearly bad things, such as impersonating a happy customer when you are actually an employee, and there are clearly good things, such as creating real and transparent relationships with the interested public.

Then there are some marginal areas that could be considered unethical depending on the fine details of how you execute them. Buzz Marketing is too broad a term to say something about the ethics. I can tell you we take seriously always following the ethical guidelines at www.womma.org

Buzz marketing is not always truthful. The FTC should prepare guidelines for enethical buzz marketing. SEO can be considered unethical in some ways too. Should the FTC prepare guidelines for SEO?

I am a big fan of Ron McDaniel. He had a recent post on the whether Buzz Marketing is the next SEO that you should really check out.
Buzz marketing is the new marketing period. (if done strategically and within reason) (buzz marketing encompass…

Buzz marketing is not always truthful. The FTC says it will deal with unethical buzz marketing on a case by case basis. Is it likely that the FTC will take on unethical SEO practices? What do you consider to be the most unethical SEO practices that the FTC should look at?

Transparency is key to ethical marketing. Are there not unethical SEO practices that put unethical buzz marketing and SEO in bed with each other? You don't seem to be directly addressing unethical practices. It would be helpful if you would.

Thanks.

Nice post Ron. I agree, that if you can do both, it is great. It creates synergy. Of course it depends on the needs of a client.
