Think like a Small Business

In my book, Buzzoodle Buzz Marketing, I lay out all the activities that can be done by a small business to create buzz and word of mouth on a daily basis. Big, even very big businesses want this as well, but rolling out a Buzz Marketing strategy to every employee seems impossible and unlikely to succeed. The key is to not think like a big business.
Here is what you do if you have more than a 100 employees but want to create organic, powerful buzz that spreads.
- Think like a small business. Create a small team of people that want to participate and give them the tools, guidelines and stories to succeed.
- Loosen up the big business culture for these people. Let them take some chances and have fun. You may not love some of the things that are said, but it is more likely to go viral and take off it is authentic and fun.
- Stop worrying about control of the message. Set guidelines, but let go of the fear. You lost control of your message years ago anyway.
- Monitor the web. Make sure you know what is being said about you and respond quickly to issues. Nothing creates good buzz better than taking care of bad buzz quickly and with an eye on converting the unhappy person to being a fan of yours.
- Encourage more people to put up online profiles and connect in online groups.
These are just some of the ways big business can stop thinking it is an impossible task and start building great buzz.
Updated 3/7/2007 - As I read back through this, I realized I implied that working for big businesses are not fun. I worked for Ernst & Young and really enjoyed it (Got great experience and had fun). I just would never have thought of creating buzz while I was there.

Yes. Yes. I couldn’t agree more. So much of what’s ‘out there’ today for small businesses is just a regurgitation of corporate principles ‘brought down’ to small businesses. But what works for corporations isn’t necessarily going to work for small businesses. They need to find their own approaches tahat will reach their markets in the way that best benefits them.
