Sly Smile

I did a presentation at the North Olmsted Chamber of Commerce (See Comment – Olmsted Chamber of Commerce) yesterday and one guy came up to me and had a sly smile on his face.  He is part of a multi-million dollar firm that has never spent one cent on advertising.   100% Word of Mouth keeps them growing.  He said it was nice to be hearing someone talk about what their company has known all along.  Word of Mouth is king.

So should you do marketing?

The answer is:  Yes, …if

  • …you have the budget
  • …it is not a substitute for creating word of mouth
  • …you do not believe that you are going to get a 20% response to your postcards
  • …you use it to strengthen the buzz, not compete with it.

I am not against marketing at all.  But if you are a small business trying to grown, put your limited energy and budget into things that will help you grow best, and I consider Word of Mouth the number one investment you can make.

Ron it’s great that you have comments about the luncheon although you were not at the North Omlsted Chamber last week. It was Olmsted Chamber of Commerece. I understand that you are not from this area so you may have been unaware of the difference and this is a touching issue with many members. North Olmsted is just North Olmsted city. Olmsted Chamber is Olmsted Falls & Olmsted Township. You will be speaking at North Olmsted March 15th 2007. That’s when we will video tape the Buzz. This was my first time on a blog.
    Thanks *AL*

    Thanks.

Silly on my part, and I am sure that is an ongoing challenge for Olmsted. For whatever reason, until I did the presentation I always thought they were all North Olmsted.

I am glad you visited the blog and corrected me.
