Three Kinds of People Create Buzz
Who Creates Buzz?
There are three primary kinds of people that will create word of mouth about your company.
- Influentials – They may not actively talk about you often, but when they do it carries a lot of weight.
- Advocates – Your customers and friends that love your company and what it represents.
- Employees – Most employees do not think to create buzz, but they can with guidance and encouragement.
If your goal is to create word of mouth and buzz, you must have different strategies for these different groups. Influencers must be enticed to create some buzz, Advocates must be encouraged to create buzz, and employees must be educated on the importance of creating buzz and how to do it. If you understand your goal and approach, you will be very successful.

You are so right about some of the origins of buzz. On your list of three, the one most businesses dismiss is the employees. And yet, of the three, they are the most active and credible. They are insiders, they know the scoop. They can talk about the vision and brand of a company better than anyone else, when they truly understand and believe in it.
As we often tell our clients — you can’t expect your employees to keep your promise if they don’t understand it.
Great blog!

I definitely agree with using employees for buzz. I saw this sort of thing with Vector marketing. Their practice was selling high quality knives to people face to face. Before they even set their sales people out they filled them with enthusiasm about the product and company using a combination of product knowledge and live demonstrations. Brilliant idea. How is someone supposed to sell a product or company if they don’t believe in it themselves? Friends and family can be overlooked as well, and their word can travel far. One family member tells a friend who tells another friend…Good post and great things to keep in mind here.
