Is Seth Godin More Powerful Than Yahoo!?

Looking at my stats for my blog today, the number one traffic referrer was Google, of course.  Rounding out the top 5 was a post on Seth Godin’s blog that is over a year old.

Yahoo! was not in the top 5.

That made me ask the question:  Is a link from one popular blog more important than your search engine rank in Yahoo?  It would apprear so.

  1. Yes, he is. HE is a marketing GOD! His books have changed my entire perception of marketing.

Maybe I should posting on his blog…..

    Thanks for the comment Michael.

He actually does not allow comments on his blog, but you can do trackbacks. That can be effective as well.

  3. I think that goes to show just the opposite. It shows just HOW important yahoo rank is. If I typed in “Buzz Marketing” in yahoo and this site was on the first page of results, i think you would be generating a LOT more traffic than from Seth Godin’s blog.

Of course nothing against Seth Godin, but I think yahoo rank takes the cake in generating traffic. But I have been known to be wrong from time to time.

Or we could say that having a link from a resource that is well known and complimentary to your message is as good as ranking on the 2nd or 3rd page of Yahoo, and it is a lot less work.

The truth is, it all matters. I was just having fun and trying to make a point. Google still brings in many times the hits that Seth brings in.

Ron – I have found the same thing. My 3rd biggest refering site is Guy Kawasaki’s. I posted a trackback MONTHS ago and get traffic from it EVERY day! I also get traffic from Seth Godin’s site everyday.

On an interesting note, I wrote about Change Resistors a while back. One of the posts was on passive aggressive behavior – at least 3-5 people search on that term and come to my site every day as well (from various search engines). So posting on a topic that’s important to people helps too!!! (Not that you didn’t know that)

One way to think about that is: What would people not do every day but run into as a problem they must research?

Passive Agressive behavior is something you do not learn about until you need to, but it is a common problem to run into. That makes it a good search term.

  7. Just like Ann, I also get good traffic from trackbacks to A-listers like Seth, Guy, and Kathy Sierra. If you can add to the conversation, often you can keep this traffic going and continue to build on it and *keep* the traffic. I think it’s all about adding value in an uncommon way.
